OEM vs ODM: the definitions
Both terms describe ways to bring hardware to market under your own brand, but they differ in who owns the design:
- OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): you provide the design or detailed specification, and the manufacturer builds it. You own the design; they own the production.
- ODM (Original Design Manufacturer): the manufacturer already has a proven product design, which you brand, customise and sell as your own. You get to market faster because the R&D is already done.
The practical difference
In practice the choice comes down to time, cost, control and volume. OEM gives you maximum control and differentiation but requires your own engineering, tooling investment and longer timelines. ODM gets you a certified, market-ready product under your brand in a fraction of the time and cost, with customisation on top — ideal if speed to market and a lean team matter more than owning every design detail. Many brands blend both: an ODM base with OEM-style customisation of firmware, ports or enclosure.
Which model is right for you?
Choose ODM if you are an ISP, system integrator or distributor who wants a house brand quickly, without building a hardware team. Choose OEM if you have specific technical requirements or IP you must own and the resources to drive a full development cycle. If you are unsure, start with an ODM engagement and add OEM-level customisation as your line matures.
Why a Make-in-India partner matters
Manufacturing your line in India — with a partner who is already MTCTE certified and a Trusted Source–approved manufacturer — gives you credibility, procurement eligibility (Make-in-India, local-supplier preferences) and local support your customers can reach. It also shortens supply chains and reduces the risk of sitting on imported dead stock. For an Indian brand, "designed and made in India" is both a compliance advantage and a marketing one.
Choosing an OEM/ODM partner: checklist
- Proven, certified product platforms (MTCTE, CE, FCC, RoHS)?
- Make-in-India manufacturing and local support?
- Branding, firmware and packaging customisation?
- Flexible minimum order quantities so you are not overexposed?
- A roadmap across switching, wireless, security and cloud?
- Clear IP, warranty and RMA terms?

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between OEM and ODM?
With OEM you own the design and the manufacturer builds to it; with ODM the manufacturer provides a ready design you brand and customise.
Which is faster to market?
ODM is typically faster because the design and certification are already done — you brand and customise rather than build from scratch.
Can I customise an ODM product?
Yes — branding, packaging, firmware and often hardware options (ports, enclosure) can be customised on an ODM base.
