What makes education networks difficult

The challenge in education is rarely coverage alone. It is density, mobility and governance arriving together.

Extreme device density in short bursts

A lecture theatre goes from empty to three hundred devices in five minutes, several times a day. Sizing for average occupancy guarantees failure at exactly the moments that matter.

Buildings that were not designed for Wi-Fi

Older academic buildings have thick masonry, deep rooms and long corridors. Newer ones have glass and steel. Both attenuate signal in ways a floor plan does not reveal.

Students move constantly

Between blocks, libraries, hostels and grounds, expecting a session to survive the walk. Roaming that drops connections is the most common student complaint.

Governance and accountability

Institutions need to apply content policy, identify who was on the network, and keep administrative systems away from student devices — often with a very small IT team.

Separating traffic that must not mix

A campus network carries student, staff, administrative, laboratory and guest traffic. Keeping them apart is both a security requirement and a governance one.

Student network

Internet and learning resources, with content policy applied and client isolation so devices cannot see each other across hostels.

Staff and faculty

Separate from students, with access to teaching resources and internal systems as policy allows.

Administration

Examination, finance and student record systems on their own VLAN, unreachable from student or guest networks.

Guests and visitors

Time-bound portal access for parents, visitors and event attendees, isolated from everything else.

Separation is enforced on distinct VLANs by NetForce switching, with inter-VLAN policy applied at the NetGuard X5 gateway — so the isolation is structural rather than a rule that can be misconfigured away.

Running a campus network with a small team

Most institutions run a large estate with a handful of staff. Everything below is about reducing the number of things that require someone to walk somewhere.

Zero-touch expansion

A new block or hostel is provisioned from a template rather than configured from scratch, so growth does not consume the team.

Central visibility

Problems in a distant building surface on the console rather than through a complaint, which is the difference between maintenance and firefighting.

Policy applied once

Content and access policy is set centrally and applies consistently across every building, rather than being maintained per site.

Term-time patterns

Load is highly seasonal. Central analytics show where capacity is genuinely short before the next intake rather than after it.

How a deployment runs

  1. Survey the campus. Building by building, including hostels and outdoor spaces, and including where coverage fails today.
  2. Design capacity and backbone. Access point counts sized for peak occupancy, with the inter-building backbone sized for aggregation.
  3. Design segmentation and policy. Student, staff, administration and guest separation, with content policy defined before rollout.
  4. Deploy in phases. Building by building, typically aligned to vacations where possible but not dependent on them.
  5. Operate centrally. Monitoring, policy and expansion from one console as the campus grows.

Frequently asked questions

How do you size Wi-Fi for a lecture theatre?

By concurrent devices at full occupancy rather than by room area, allowing for more than one device per student, then validating with a survey.

Can we apply content filtering policy?

Yes. Policy is applied at the NetGuard X5 gateway and enforced consistently across the campus rather than per building.

Can students be kept away from administrative systems?

Yes. Administration sits on a separate VLAN enforced in switching hardware, with no path from the student network.

Does this cover hostels and outdoor areas?

Yes. Indoor access points cover hostels; ruggedised outdoor units cover quadrangles, walkways and sports grounds.

Can we build it in phases?

Yes. Buildings can be added over time under one management console, so later phases join the existing network rather than forming a separate one.

Procurement and phasing in education

Institutional buying has its own rhythm, and network projects have to fit it.

Budget cycles and phasing

Campus networks are commonly funded block by block across several years. We design the target architecture up front so each funded phase is a step towards it rather than an isolated purchase that has to be undone later.

Tendering

Institutions frequently tender. We are happy to produce a design document you can tender against, including access point counts, switching requirements and segmentation design, whether or not we win the supply.

Indian manufacturing

Equipment is designed and manufactured at our facility in Sanand, Gujarat. For institutions with domestic procurement preferences, this is directly relevant. Our equipment is MTCTE certified (and CE, FCC & RoHS compliant), with products listed on the Trusted Telecom Portal.

Support during term

The times a campus network must not fail are examinations and admissions. Support comes directly from the OEM with India-based engineers rather than through an overseas queue.

What we need from you to quote

A useful design needs a little information up front. None of it is onerous, and it saves a round of revisions later.

From that we produce a design document with access point count and placement, switching and PoE requirements, segmentation design and the management model. You are free to tender against it.
